Beverly Hills, Holmby Hills and Bel-Air are sometimes called the "Platinum Triangle": the locations of Los Angeles' most exclusive neighborhoods.

Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills is a fertile area previously noted for the streams that flowed from Coldwater and Benedict canyons, forming a swamp (ciénaga in Spanish) near the present day intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Beverly Drive. The Native American Tongva tribe (Gabrielino in Spanish), considered it a holy site calling it the "Gathering of the Waters," (El Rodeo de las Aguas in Spanish).

In the mid-late 1700's a former Spanish soldier named Ferrer Valdez and his wife, Maria Rita Villa, settled a 4,500-acre (18 km²) land grant ranch comprising much of the area. Their first home was near the modern intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Alpine Drive.

The famous acting couple Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford bought land on Summit Drive in 1919. Soon other movie stars and wealthy Los Angelinos moved to Beverly Hills, building the large, stylish mansions the city is famous for.

The population of the city of Beverly Hills rose from was 672 in 1920 to 17,429 in 1930. Building permit value in 1918 was $35,200 in 1922 it was $1,838,994.

In 1925 humorist Will Rogers was given the title "Honorary Mayor of Beverly Hills," the only person to be so honored. In 1928, the landmark Beverly-Wilshire Hotel on Wilshire Boulevard opened. In the era after WWII Rodeo Drive became a world center of stylish and expensive shopping and fashion. The Via Rodeo opened in 1990, featuring a variety of upscale shops and restaurants.

Holmby Hills

The first European owner of the land that is now Holmby Hills, Westwood, and UCLA was a Spanish soldier named Don Maximo Alanis, who obtained title to 4,438 acres (18 km²) under a Mexican land grant in 1843. He called it San Jose de Buenos Ayres. The major development of Holmby Hills was begun by Arthur Letts. Letts intended to create a neighborhood of grandiose estates and named the development "Holmby Hills," after his birthplace, a small town in England named Holdenby. Letts died in 1923 and his son-in-law, Harold Janss, continued the project. From the start, Holmby Hills has attracted the rich and famous and now represents some of the most desirable property in the world.
